Created during the French Revolution, Vieille Saint Girons evidenced the dune ridge, artificially created by Napoleon Bonaparte. Then came Louis XVIII, who decided to drain the marshes and plant maritime pine trees to fix the position of the dunes (an 18th century form of dune rehabilitation). This thus protected the area, which was subject to the vicissitudes of the winds and tides. The village today is home to remarkable flora, whilst the banks of the Courant d’Huchet river, classified as a nature reserve, tempt you for superb walks.
