Under the sun of Cornouaille
Celtic land par excellence, the Cornouaille is Breton country which includes a large part of the Finistère region and the south of the Côtes d'Armor. Its historical capital, Quimper, is crossed by the prettiest river in France, the Odet, whose mouth is some 20 km further south... in Benodet!
Although a visit to Quimper must be on the agenda during your stay on the Port de Plaisance campsite, this city is not unique in having an important historical heritage. Further east along the coast, the town centre of Concarneau, flanked by walls and located on an island amidst the port, should be discovered.
Opposite Bénodet, around 10 nautical miles from the mainland, the Île des Glénan (Glénan Islands archipelago) is one of Brittany’s loveliest natural beauty spots. Within its string of islets, are concentrated a variety of heavenly landscapes, leaving no visitor unmoved. The main archipelago islands hem in a turquoise lagoon with waters of a surprising transparency, around which superb white sandy beaches nestle, having an exoticism unparalleled in the Grand Ouest (north-west France).
We’d also just mention the small village of Pont Aven, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) from Bénodet. Its legendary charm and very particular character has seen so many painters passing by, that it has given its name to a school: the school of Pont Aven, with Paul Gauguin as its leader.
Further West, the Wild Coast, shaped by crashing waves during storms on the Iroise Sea, is a must-see tourist site, like the famous mountains of Arrée, in the center of the Department.
