Go round the towns and villages in the Hérault
Around 20 minutes from the Les Rivières campsite, discover the magnificent medieval village of Saint Guilhem le Désert. Built around the Gellone abbey, a symbol of Roman Languedoc art, stroll in the narrow alleyways, have a break to cool down on the village square and take the Pont du Diable (Devil’s bridge) above the Hérault gorge.
Visit the old town in Béziers with medieval architecture, the cathedral and 13th century bridge or the harbour town of Sète, also known as the “Venice of the Languedoc”, owing to the canal network here. Running alongside the Etang de Thau lagoon, singer-songwriter Georges Brassens’s native town is also renowned for the numerous sandy beaches, and water jousting tournaments.
Lastly, look around Montpellier, a young and vibrant city. Lose yourself in the medieval streets, have a drink in the famous Place de la Comédie, in the centre of which stands the “three graces” fountain statue, admire the works of Pierre Soulage in the Musée Fabre art museum, and climb the Arc de Triomphe arch and viewpoint, to enjoy a unique view over the capital of the Hérault.
