Calvados, the stronghold for the Normandy landings
Staying on the Portland campsite in Port en Bessin, enables holidaymakers to enjoy the perfect location to quickly reach the main memorial sites linked to the D-Day landings in Normandy. The Calvados coastline, and more broadly the coast in Basse Normandie, boast many historical sites, museums and military cemeteries associated with this famous day, 6th June 1944. This day marked the beginning of the Allied liberation in mainland Europe, during the Second World War.
The Portland campsite is located just a stone’s throw from the beach known as Omaha Beach, one of the five landing beaches together with Juno, Gold, Utah and Sword Beach. Nearby we find one of the most important American cemeteries.
Amongst the other must-see attractions of the Normandy landings are the Pointe du Hoc promontory, the Longues sur Mer, Merville and Grandcamp Maisy artillery batteries, Saint Mère Eglise museum or even the Mémorial Pegasus museum in Caen. A stay on the Portland campsite enables you to discover them all.
Calvados also features numerous tourist sites unconnected with the D–Day landings. A very good example is the medieval city of Bayeux, located 9 kilometres from the campsite. There are many half-timbered houses in the town centre, a magnificent cathedral and the famous...Bayeux Tapestry!
