Discover Gascony’s loveliest heritage villages
The Gers is a “slow tourism” destination par excellence! What better than staying in this department to slow down and take time to live. Allow yourself to be enchanted by the picturesque villages and small alleyways, traditional markets and natural landscapes. Have a trip to Auch and take the Escalier Monumental (monumental staircase with 234 steps). There you can admire the statue of d'Artagnan, the proud Gascon hero, and captain of the King’s Musketeers.
Visit the impressive castle in Lavardens and stop in the medieval village of Sarrant. Both villages are designated as “Plus Beaux Villages de France” (protecting and promoting their beauty and remarkable cultural heritage). Around twenty minutes from the Lac de Thoux campsite, go back in time to the Renaissance, by visiting Caumont castle in Cazaux Savès. During your trips, enjoy Gers culinary specialities, such as foie gras (duck or goose liver) or duck confit (salt-cured duck legs cooked and preserved in duck fat). You can also stock up on summer flavours by enjoying sun-kissed kiwis and melons from Gascony.
Toulouse, the so called “Ville Rose” (“Pink City” due to the pink stone buildings), has a wealth of architectural heritage. Amongst the treasures are the Place du Capitole square, Saint-Sernin basilica, Les Jacobins (a former Jacobins’ convent now a church) and Hôtel d'Assézat (previously a woad merchant’s house, presently an art and furniture museum collection). You can also admire the magnificent views over the city from the banks of the Garonne river and walk on those of the Canal du Midi. Lastly, the region is perfect for doing all kinds of outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking, horse-riding or canoeing !
