The perfect starting point to visit the Charente coast
By now you’ll have understood, nothing beats cycling to discover the wonders on the island of Ré. Get on your two-wheeler and go off to explore Ré’s most picturesque villages; Saint Clément des Baleines with a lighthouse in the middle of nowhere, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, and Les Portes en Ré with a nature reserve running alongside, home to exceptional flora and fauna on the salt marshes. There is also La Flotte, with the “Plus Beaux Villages de France” (“Most Beautiful Villages of France”) designation, owing to the authentic architectural heritage and streets in bloom, not forgetting Saint Martin de Ré and the renowned fortifications here built by Vauban, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For a trip with a change of scenery, go by sea to Fort Boyard. From Saint Martin de Ré, boats operate a shuttle service to this historic building (with the Monument Historique heritage designation) on the Charente coast. You’ll be able to admire the fortress, made famous by the eponymous TV game show, from every angle whilst enjoying the commentary on the fascinating history and secrets of its construction. During this three-hour boat trip, you’ll also be able to catch sight of the islands of Oléron and Aix.

In the heart of the old town, stroll in the streets and discover the entire wealth of architectural heritage here.
