L'Orée du Bois, a holiday by the sea in the heart of the forest
It is in the heart of the peninsula of Arvert, in Charente Maritime, that we find the 4-star campsite L'Orée du Bois. This establishment, located four kilometres from the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, in the community of Les Mathes, is ideal for a relaxing and enjoyable family holiday!
Lush greenery near the ocean
This exceptional campsite, at some 60 kilometres South of La Rochelle, nestles in the heart of the Courbe Forest, in the community of Les Mathes, famous for its seaside resort La Palmyre and its Zoological Park, between Royan and the island of Oleron. L'Orée du Bois extends over a 7-acres property and offers in total 429 pitchesl, a good part of them is nowadays covered by mobile homes of all sizes.
The sunny or shaded pitches, depending on the wishes of one another, are all delimited and have an average surface area of 100 m². As for the mobile homes, they are many and varied. They can accommodate four to six people, can be equipped or not by a covered terrace and their surface ranges from 26 to 33 m². Comfortable and nicely furnished, they all feature a bathroom and a separate toilet.
All of these mobile homes are implanted in the forest, offering all guests a little freshness and shade in a region where the sun is richly shining throughout the summer season. Six areas however have been pruned to accommodate barbecues on the campsite. Thus, meat lovers can enjoy to their heart's content, especially as they can provide themselves directly at the mini-market of L'Oree du Bois.
The other facilities of the establishment include a bar and a restaurant, whose menu proposes traditional dishes, as well as fast food and tex-mex dishes. In addition, a take away service is also available on-site.
Relaxation, wellness and swimming are on the holiday programme
The centre of this 4-star campsite in the Charente Maritime is home to many sports and leisure facilities, starting with its heated water park of 2,000 m². It is one of the largest fun water parks in the vicinity of Royan. There is a swimming pool and a magnificent tropical lagoon, with its artificial upstream river to swim against the tide, its paddling pool, its spiral water slide and its toboggan with three tracks.
This campsite with water park of Les Mathes also features a balneo area, with bubble baths, geysers, water cannons and anatomical benches. To relax and to unwind there's nothing better! You can also work out by participating in the aquagym sessions organized in one of the pools of the water park, or by attending the outdoor fitness area, equipped with numerous body building and aerobics devices.
Among the other facilities on L'Orée du Bois we mention the multi sports ground, an archery stand, a jeu-de-boules court, ping-pong tables, a great playground for children, a trampoline, and a video games room. Les Mathes, tourist resort in Charente Maritime
Even if the campsite L'Orée du Bois is settled in the community of Les Mathes, it is more often the tourist district of La Palmyre that is mentioned when people speak about this city. This area concentrates as a matter of fact most of the activities and businesses related to holiday. This beach resort is also famous for the zoo that it houses and from the campsite it can be reached in less than ten minutes.
It is indeed one of the most renowned zoos in Europe and one of the most visited zoos in France. Housing more than 1,600 animals, the Zoo of la Palmyre welcomes every year more than 750,000 visitors in its 18-acres park.
South of La Palmyre, after having crossed the community of Palais sur Mer, the city of Royan offers tourists an important heritage. You can also take the ferry to cross the estuary of the Gironde and reach the Médoc.
Most of the tourist sights of the Charente Maritime are situated North of L'Orée du Bois. Fifteen kilometres from the campsite for example, it is possible to visit the island of Oléron, the second largest island in metropolitan France after Corsica.
Between Oléron and Fouras, it is possible to catch sight of Fort Boyard, an ancient fortress protecting the arsenal of Rochefort, well known by fans of the eponymous television game.
Finally, you cannot stay on campsite L'Orée du Bois without visiting La Rochelle. Among the must-sees of this city, there's of course the aquarium. It is indeed considered one of the most beautiful aquariums in France!
