A further not-to-be-missed attraction, during your stay on the Île de Ré, is the fortified town of Saint Martin de Ré. This is around twenty kilometres from the La Plage campsite. To protect the entire population of the island, in the event of attack, King Louis XIV entrusted to the famous military engineer, Sébastien Le Prester de Vauban, the responsibility of fortifying the town. The latter here produced one of his most beautiful works, a magnificent star-shaped fortification, which makes Saint Martin de Ré deserving of being classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site…
