A charming mountainous Provencal region
In staying on the Domaine des 2 Soleils, you are in the town of Serres, a medieval character town (Petite Cité de Caractère owing to its outstanding heritage), in the heart of the Baronnies Provençales regional natural park between Provence and the Alps. Nestling against the La Pignolette rock, this village overlooks the valley and its braided river, the “Buech”. With the lovely medieval houses, church, clock tower and alleyways, it is genuinely worth seeing. Go and look around its market and be tempted by local specialities. As you leave the village, the landscaped Germanette lake is a fascinating stop. With a swimming area supervised by lifeguards and water sports centre, it will delight your children. Make the most of it!
A further lovely small town to visit, 35 minutes further south, is Sisteron. Dubbed the gem of Haute Provence this old town, situated by the Durance river, enjoys an exceptional natural panorama. Visit its cathedral, one of the largest religious buildings in Provence and the Citadel fortress, a genuine icon of the town from which you’ll have the loveliest view of the region and town below. Further choice small towns are Laragne Montéglin and its lovely Provençal Thursday morning market and even Rosans, with the priory and lavender.
Finally, in the height of summer, if you’re looking for coolness in the surrounding area, go to the Gorges de la Méouge gorge, south of Laragne Montéglin. These gorges link the Drôme Provençale and Hautes Alpes regions, by a small road which winds around some ten kilometres. Deep in the gorges, a river forms small basins in the limestone rock, where you can swim amidst a remarkable natural heritage. Pure delight!
