The capital of nougat, the town of Montélimar alone epitomizes all the beauty and authenticity of Provence. To the sound of cicadas, go through the old town’s alleyways to see the magnificent Château des Adhémar castle. Dating back to the 12th century this impressive building nestles at the top of a hill, overlooking the town. It offers a superb view of the surrounding countryside. Culture lovers won’t want to miss the Saint-Martin museum of contemporary art, or even the Maison de Diane de Poitiers (being the former residence of Henry II’s mistress, now of architectural significance). If you can stop here on Saturday morning, the weekly market is located around the market square, with local produce stalls.
